Welcome to L’Estartit, a charming seaside village nestled between the limestone cliffs of the Montgrí Massif and the Mediterranean Sea. Once a small fishing hamlet for nearby Torroella de Montgrí, it has evolved into a premier destination while maintaining its authentic Catalan soul. Whether you are here for the world-class marine life or the golden sandy beaches, L’Estartit offers a perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.
Take a 45-minute hike from Torroella to the top of the mountain. The 13th-century castle is an empty shell, but the panoramic views of the Medes Islands and the Pyrenees are breathtaking.
Visit the mouth of the River Ter. It’s a peaceful, wild beach area perfect for bird watching, cycling, or a quiet walk away from the main tourist strips.
L’Estartit is the “Mecca” of Mediterranean diving, but it wasn’t always a protected paradise. In the mid-20th century, the Medes Islands were heavily fished. The transformation began in the 1960s with pioneers like Unisub (founded in 1965), who recognized the unique biodiversity of the archipelago. Thanks to decades of local activism, the islands were declared a Protected Marine Reserve in 1983. Today, it is one of the best-preserved ecosystems in Europe, famous for its massive groupers (Meros) that are remarkably unafraid of humans.
L’Estartit sits within the Natural Park of Montgrí, the Medes Islands, and the Baix Ter. This park covers over 8,000 hectares and is unique because it combines three distinct environments:
